Tromoi Bridge

Tromøy bridge ( Norwegian Tromøybrua, Tromøybroa ) is a car suspension bridge that crosses the Strait of Tromøy ( Norwegian Tromøysund ) east of Arendal ( Fülk Eust-Agder , Norway ) and connects Tromøy ( Norwegian Tromøy ), the largest island of South Norway . The bridge is part of the national highway 409 ( Nor. Fylkesvei 409 ).

The construction of the bridge was prepared by a special committee led by Christian Stray . The project was developed from 1938 to 1961 [1] . For two years, 50-60 people worked at the construction site. The grand opening took place on October 21, 1961 , the red ribbon was cut by Trygve Bratteli , Minister of Transport and Communications of Norway. At that time it was the longest bridge in Norway. Construction costs amounted to NOK 7 million [2] .

Features and stats

The total length of the Tromey Bridge is 400 meters with 12 spans (the longest span is 240 meters) [3] . The bridge is the only land route connecting the mainland and the island of Tromey, which is home to about 6,000 people, in this regard, in 2001, traffic on it amounted to about 7,500 a year, by 2008 - about 8,350, and in 2011 - 9,500. Now traffic is about 9500 [4] . The bridge can withstand a 50- ton road train .

Pedestrian and bike paths

In 2012, the construction of an additional pedestrian and bicycle path of the Tromoi Bridge was completed. New sections, consisting of reinforced steel gratings (which provides a large load and prevents the accumulation of snow) were suspended on the western side. The width is 2.5 meters, the height of the railing on both sides is 160 centimeters . An additional section provided a continuous flow of cyclists from the center of Rental to the island. The project costs amounted to 30 million kroons [4] .
