Biography

Edmund Waller was born March 3, 1606 in Coleshill. He was educated first in Eton, then in Cambridge.

He married a rich widow early, and soon burying her, he remained a rich and cheerful widower for 28 years. Then begins his courtship with Dorothea Sidney, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Leicester , whom he sang in different ways under the name of Saccharis. When she married the Duke of Sunderland, Waller, who knew how to be inconsolable only in verse, soon married a second time [5] .

Between 1624 and 1679 he met repeatedly in the House of Commons . In 1643 he participated in a monarchist conspiracy. After the plot was revealed, he betrayed all his accomplices and, thus, saved his life. He was released after paying a fine of 10,000 pounds, while his accomplices were executed.

As a poet, he was greatly influenced by French classicism. He wrote poems on political and religious topics. The author of apologetic works praising both Oliver Cromwell and King Charles II. He is also the author of many works of love lyrics and anacreontic poetry .

Edmund Waller died on October 21, 1687 in Beaconsfield.
