Description
Found in Burmese amber (type series: Kachin State, on Ledo Road 105 km from Miyitkama), Myanmar , Southeast Asia ). Cretaceous period , Cenomanian stage (about 100 Ma). Body length up to 0.435 mm. The number of ommatidia in the eyes: 2 + 2. It features a very large swivel, whose length is up to 60% of the length of the thigh. The front surface of the head bears microscopic short setae ranging in length from 0.05 to 0.01 mm. The view of Grinnellia ventis was first described in 2006 by American entomologists Kenneth Christiansen and Paul Nascimbene using the type series kept at the American Museum of Natural History ( New York ) along with Propachyotoma conica , Protoisotoma burma , Cretacentomobrya burma , Proisotoma pettersonae and other new fossil species. The generic name Grinnellia is given in honor of the American Grinnell College (Grinnell College, USA ) for supporting this and other studies of collembol . The species name G. ventis was given in honor of the American paleoentomologist Summer Ventis ( USA ) for his help in the work. The taxon Grinnellia ventis is close to the genus Pararrhopalites with its large swivels , similar to Spatulosminthurus , and is also close to Sminthuricinus , Sminthurconus , Mucrovirga [1] [2] .
