Biography

Born in a teacher’s family. In 1931 he entered the Physics and Mathematics of Voronezh University (Voronezh State University), which he graduated in 1936. Pupil L.A. Lyusternik . In 1936-1937 - assistant of the Department of Higher Mathematics of Voronezh State University. In 1937-1940 he studied at the graduate school of the Institute of Mathematics of Moscow State University, in 1940-1944 he taught at Tomsk University , assistant professor of mathematical analysis.

In 1944 he returned to Voronezh State University, where he worked successively as an assistant professor, professor (since 1963), head of the department of mathematical analysis (in 1950-1953 - department of higher mathematics), dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, vice-rector of the Voronezh State University for Science.

V. I. Sobolev played an important role in the creation of the Voronezh school of functional analysis: he invited M. A. Krasnoselsky and S. G. Krein to work in Voronezh in 1952, organized the Institute of Mathematics (NIIM) with them, became its first director .

The activities of V. I. Sobolev as a scientist and teacher were awarded the orders of the Badge of Honor, the Red Banner of Labor and five medals.

Scientific activity

In his student years, V.I. Sobolev listened to lectures by M.M. Greenblum and L.A. Lyusternik on various sections of functional analysis - the field of mathematics, which most of his scientific works are devoted to. The first results are related to the study of critical values of even functionals on spheres.

Later V. I. Sobolev, together with L. V. Kantorovich, developed the theory of semi-ordered spaces. These results were included in his doctoral dissertation, Studies in the Theory of Semi-ordered Rings, which he defended in 1962.

V. I. Sobolev obtained a number of interesting results in the theory of nonlinear integral equations, the theory of Orlicz spaces (together with M. A. Krasnoselsky ). Investigated the properties of square roots of linear operators.

The book "Elements of functional analysis", written by V. I. Sobolev together with L. A. Lyusternik, has been translated into East Germany, India, the USA, Poland, Bulgaria, Japan, and China. On its basis, another widely known textbook was written - “A Short Course on Functional Analysis” (1982).
