Biography
In 1852 he graduated from the University of Strasbourg. Since 1876, professor at the University of Paris .
Major works
Friedel first synthesized a number of organic compounds: lactic acid from bromopropionic acid ( 1861 ), isopropyl alcohol ( 1862 ) and glycerin from acetone ( 1873 ), melissic acid ( 1880 ) and mesocamphoric ( 1889 ) acid. Together with J. Crafts, he studied organic silicon compounds (1863–70); established the tetravalent silicon (and titanium ) and found the similarity of some silicon compounds with carbon compounds. Friedel-Crafts reaction is associated with the name Friedel. Friedel received artificially quartz , tridymite , rutile , topaz , etc .; studied the pyroelectricity of crystals . Foreign Corresponding Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences ( 1894 ).
