Story
In this episode, Mulder and Scully investigate the mysterious killings of people killed by an obscure creature, leaving a strange scar on the victim's body. The investigation leads the agents into the big top of the circus freaks, where mysterious crimes continue. [2]
Darin Morgan, at the suggestion of producer Howard Gordon, shortly after the episode was released, became a full-time screenwriter for the series. A bizarre, funny, sometimes terrible story about a series of murders in a colony of freak colony is considered a milestone in the history of the series, expanding the usual framework of gloomy tones in a funny, less predictable direction [3] . For this episode, Darin Morgan was nominated for the Edgar Allan Poe Award [4] .
