Geography

Welcome sign at the northern entrance to the village

The village is located in the southern part of the Urvan region , between the rivers Cherek and Psygansu . It is located 17 km south of the district center - Nartkala and 25 km east of the city of Nalchik .

It borders the lands of settlements: Zaragiž in the south, Aushiger in the southwest, Urvan in the northwest and Old Cherek in the north. In the east, the territory of the rural settlement adjoins the lands of the State Forest Fund (Goslesfond).

The village is located in the foothill zone of the republic. The terrain is rugged, and mainly consists of foothill inclined plains, sharply turning in the south and east into the mountains. In the northern part of the village, the Chereksky Ridge begins, stretching along the right bank of the Cherek River, right up to the village of Nizhny Cherek . Riverbanks are mostly with steep cliffs. The elevation differences within the rural settlement are significant. History

Guyd celebration (Kurban Bayram) in the village

Permanent settlements between the rivers Cherek and Psygansu exist since the XVI century .

In the XVIII century, above the confluence of the Psygansu river in the Cherek, there were 6 auls - Zhanhotovo ( Kabard. Cherk. Zhankhuey ), Zhanukovo ( Kabard. Cherk. Zhanykuey ), Kazievo ( Kabard . Cherk. Kazyaz kheleble ), Psheunovo. -cherk. Pschyune kheleble ), Khostovo ( Kabard. Cherk. Houest kheble ) and Shokhtovo ( Kabard. Cherk. Shekhut kheble ).

In 1864, with the end of the Russo-Caucasian war, the population of auls declined sharply during the course of muhajirism , which was caused by the reluctance of many to recognize the authority of an infidel Russian Tsar and the military Russian administration.

In 1865, during the Land Reform of Kabarda and the program for the enlargement of Kabardian villages, all the villages located above the confluence of the Psygansu River in Cherek were merged into one settlement, which was named Zhanhotovo ( Kabard dir . Janghueti ), in honor of the largest of 6 united auls. However, until now the names of some auls have been preserved beyond some quarters of the village.

In 1920, with the final establishment of Soviet power in Kabarda, by the decision of the Revolutionary Committee of the Nalchik District, Zhanhotovo, like all other Kabardian settlements, was renamed due to the presence of princely and noble families in their names. As a result, the village received its new name - Psygansu, by the name of the river of the same name.

The Village People’s Council at the village of Zhanhotovo was formed in 1920 and in the same year was renamed Psygansuevsky.

During the Great Patriotic War , the village was occupied by German troops for about two months.

In 1963, the abolished village of Vagatsuko was located in the village, located in the valley of the river of the same name.
