Coming from a family of immigrants from Catalonia, he studied law and practiced law. Since 1840, he held several ministerial posts in the government of Manuel Bulnes . He was elected President of Chile in 1851, and re-elected in 1856. In 1861, he was elected President of the Supreme Court and remained in office until his death. His name is given to the city of Puerto Montt .
