Biography

Norbert Lala Ratsirahonana was born on November 18, 1938 in Antsiranan , in the Diana region of Madagascar .

He founded and led the Asa Vita no Ifampitsarana (Judged By Your Work) party, which opposed President Didier Ratsiraki . This party became part of the coalition that elected Albert Zafi as president in 1993 .

On May 28, 1996 , when the prime minister was ousted by parliament in a vote of no confidence, Zafi appointed Ratsirahonana the president of the Supreme Constitutional Court. Soon after, Zafi was removed from office and, on September 5, 1996, Ratsirahonana became acting president of Madagascar . The presidential election was held on November 3, 1996 , as a result of which Ratsirahonana took fourth place (after Ratsiraki, Zafi and Razafimahaleo) with 10.14% of the vote [1] [2] . In the second round, held on December 29 , Ratsirahonana supported Zafi, but defeated Ratsiraka. Ratsirahonana resigned as president when Ratsiraka was sworn in on February 9, 1997 . Twelve days later, he also lost the post of prime minister, and his party won only 13 out of 150 seats in parliament in the 1998 elections .

In September 1997, Ratsirahonana became chairman of the National Executive Committee of the opposition coalition [3] .

In December 2001, Ratsirahonana withdrew from the presidential election and approved the candidacy of Mark Ravalumanana . He was appointed “ambassador” of the president, but in 2006 he resigned from his post and in August of the same year he nominated himself for the presidential election scheduled for December 3 . According to official figures, he received 4.22% of the vote and took fifth place (in the province of Antananarivo - 7.14% of the vote) [4] .

As soon as the military coup of 2009 took place and it was announced that the leader of the opposition Andri Radzuelina would become president, March 17, 2009 Ratsirahonana was present as the host of the ceremony. On March 31, 2009, Radzuelina appointed Ratsirahonana one of the 44 members of the Supreme Transitional Administration [5] .
