Story
Teen Benjamin “Benji” Purvis lives with her single mother Judith, a women’s clothing designer who designs popcorn crafts in her free time. Benji dreams of becoming a science fiction writer, so he goes to the camp for beginning writers, taking there his novel “Yeast Lords”. The conference, held in the camp, is visited by the once popular, and now reaping the fruits of the glory of his first and only novel, writer Ronald Chevalier, who announces a competition for the best work among teenagers. The winner of the competition will have the opportunity to publish his work with the support of Chevalier.
Despite the fact that it becomes clear from Chevalier's speeches that he is a man with bloated conceit and scant imagination, Benji does not pay attention to this and also passes his novel to the competition, after which he returns home. There he learns that his mother wrote him in the religious program "Guardian Angel", in which Benji was assigned the mentally retarded Dusty, which serves as the guardian angel. Dusty's main hobby is shooting darts stuffed with feces, which he is trying to teach his protégé, but the first and only lesson ends in embarrassment - the dart enters Judith. In addition, Benji will soon meet his friends from the camp, Tabatu and Lonnie. Tabata, whom Benji left a copy of the novel, speaks well of the latter and offers to sell the rights to the film adaptation of Lonnie, filming low-budget amateur films. Benji agrees, and Lonnie writes him a check for $ 500. At the same time, Benji participates in the filming of one of the fake trailers Lonnie and Tabata.
Meanwhile, Chevalier, analyzing the entries, receives an ultimatum from his publisher: either he will send a new novel, or the contract with him will be terminated. Chevalier, who had previously unsuccessfully offered the publisher some of his crafts, drew attention to The Yeast Lords and decided to pass this book off as his own work , simultaneously changing the title to Brutus and Balzac and changing the names and characters of the main characters of the novel. The publisher praises Ronald and sends the book to print.
Soon the film Lonnie comes out, and Benji and his mother are invited to the premiere. Even before the start of the session, Benji becomes ill after seeing himself in the trailer for the previous film, and together with Tabata he leaves the cinema. In a bookstore, Benji finds Chevalier's freshly-released novel and with horror recognizes his "Yeast Lords" in it; In addition, the film adaptation of Lonnie’s authorship, which turned out to be a mediocre thrash with a radically changed plot, receives widespread disapproval, and in time Chevalier, who has podcast, accuses the authors of the film (including Benji, indicated in the credits as a screenwriter) of plagiarism.
A crushed Benji goes home to meet Dusty. He, showing seriousness unusual for himself, encourages Benji and advises him to fight for the truth. The teenager is inspired and first takes revenge on the eminent fashion designer, who promised to glorify his mother as a designer in exchange for sex, with the help of Dusty darts, and then goes to a public meeting with Ronald, who signs books to fans in the nearby bookstore. Instead of another copy of Brutus and Balzac, Benji gives a copy of the original novel to sign, hoping to encourage Chevalier to repent, but he only makes a good face on a bad game and says that Benji adapted his book for the script of the film, after which he praises the teenager and promises gifts to him as the best fan. In response, Benji hits Ronald in the face and publicly accuses the writer of theft; Arriving police arrest Benji for hooliganism.
Benji celebrates his birthday behind bars. Judith visits him and presents a parcel with hard copies of all his novels and novels. It turns out that she registered everything written by her son in the Writing Guild of America from the age of seven, in the hope that one day it would come in handy. After leaving prison, Benji turns to the Guild, and soon all copies of the disgraced Chevalier’s novel are replaced with the original “Yeast Lords”.
