Biography
In 1900 he became a member of the Riga Chess Club. In 1910 he took part in a strong chess tournament in Warsaw , in which Akiba Rubinstein won , and Hartmanis scored 9 points out of 15. [1] In 1912, at the All-Russian Masters Tournament in Vilna, he scored 10½ points out of 19. [2] In 1913, in Mitawa won his most significant victory, becoming the winner of the VI Congress of the Baltic Chess Union (11½ of 14). After the First World War, he took an active part in restoring the chess life of Latvia. He participated in the first two Latvian chess championships , where in 1924 he took fourth place after G. Matisson , F. Apnieska and K. Betins , and in 1925 he was fifth after F. Apnieska, T. Berg , V. Petrov and A. Strautmanis . For many years, Hartmanis worked as a home teacher, and in 1920 served as a tax official.
