He was the son of the Secretary of King Charles VII, Jean Chevalier. He studied law, was, like his father, from 1442 the royal secretary, from 1449 the head of the House of Accounts, from 1452 - the treasurer of France (thus becoming the successor to the first royal treasurer Jacques Coeur , who fell out of favor). In 1461, King Louis XI removed him from the post of chief treasurer, but left to serve at the House of Accounts. He headed the French embassies to England several times.
Known as the customer of two works of art: the so-called watch book Etienne Chevalier and Melensky diptych , which also depicts himself.
