Born in London, his grandfather was a French Protestant who emigrated from Orleans after the abolition of the Nantes Edict. Little biographical information about his life has been preserved. According to him, he studied anatomy under the guidance of Matthew Belli and graduated from Cambridge University, but there is no evidence for this. In 1797, already a member of the London Society of Surgeons, he wrote a pamphlet, which helped to transform the society into a medical college, in which he later became a professor of anatomy. Subsequently, he received the post of lecturer in surgery, an employee of the Westminster dispensary and personal surgeon of the Prince of Wales. Subsequently, he became a well-known lecturer and author of a number of essays on surgery, marked by various awards. He was also known as a translator of a number of scientific treatises from French into English.

Main works: Introduction to a Course of Lectures on the Operations of Surgery (1801), Treatise on Gunshot Wounds (1803, 3rd edition - 1806), General Structure of the Human Body and the Anatomy and Functions of the Skin (1823, 8 parts, several editions).
