Biography

Born December 15, 1921 in the village of Shatilovo [1] in a peasant family. Ukrainian. He studied at the Slavgorod rural school. He graduated from two courses of Sumy Chemical-Technological College . In March 1939 he was drafted into the Red Army by the Russian-Brodsky RVK of the Oryol region. In 1941 he graduated from the Smolensk Artillery School.

World War II

From August 1941, he fought in the West , from June 1942 - in the North Caucasus , from July 1943 - Leningrad , from October 1944 - on the 2nd Belorussian fronts.

The commander of the division of the 1220th howitzer artillery regiment, Captain Shumeiko, distinguished himself in the Wisla -Oder operation in battles to keep the bridgehead on the right bank of the Vistula River. On January 29, 1945, Shumeyko, being in the front ranks of the infantry of the 47th Infantry Regiment, promptly called up the division’s fire to repel enemy counterattacks. When the enemy launched a major counterattack from Michelau’s directions, breaking into the battle formations of the 47th Rifle Regiment, the commander Shumeyko, being in the ring of enemy tanks and self-propelled guns, called up the division’s fire on himself, adjusting each division salvo — knocked out two self-propelled guns and one enemy tank . Thanks to heroism, skillful artillery support, the area of ​​the bridgehead occupied by units of the 47th Infantry Regiment was retained [2] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 10, 1945, Captain Shumeyko Nikolai Artemyevich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [2] .

Post-war time

After the war he continued to serve in the army. In 1955 he graduated from the Central Artillery Courses. Since 1959, Lieutenant Colonel Shumeyko - in stock. He lived and worked in the city of Yeysk, Krasnodar Territory.
