Life Story

Angelo de Gubernatis was born in Turin, studied Sanskrit linguistics in Berlin, was a professor of this language in Florence . In 1865, fascinated by the propaganda of M. Bakunin , he retired and at the same time married Bakunin's relative Sofya Bezobrazova, sister of an economist. A year later, Gubernatis broke up with Bakunin's circle and again took the chair.

The governor traveled a lot, was twice in Russia , in 1885 spent 8 months in India . In 1886, he founded the Indian Museum and the Italian Asian Society in Florence.

He was the founder of a number of periodicals, of which the most widespread and influential was Rivista Europea (1869-1876), which served as an intermediary between the literature of Italy and the rest of Europe. After its termination, Gubernatis for 11 years (1876-1887) gave a review of foreign literature in the most popular of Italian magazines, Nuova Antologia. The Gubernatis French magazine, Revue internationale, lasted only three years (1883-1887). Of the scientific publications of Gubernatis, the most important is the Giornale della società Asiatica Italiana, founded in 1887. Gubernatis collaborated in a variety of newspapers and magazines, not only Italian, but also French, English, German, as well as in the Russian " Herald of Europe ". His "Dizionario biografico degli Scrittori contemporanei" with portraits (1879-1880), despite the lack of objectivity and uniformity, significantly complements Vapero's dictionary. In 1888, he began to publish a French alteration of it under the title "Dictionnaire International des écrivains du jour" and finished it in 1891; the flaws remained the same, but there are even more facts.

For the theater, Gubernatis wrote 15 dramas in poetry and prose. Two of his plays are most original, the plots of which are borrowed from Sanskrit literature: the trilogy “Il Re Nala” (1869, the second part was translated into German by Friedrich Marx) and “Savitrî”, an idyll in 2 acts in verse (on French translated by Julien Lugol). In the history of literature, his most extensive work is “Storia universale della letteratura” (Mil. And Naples, 1882–1885); this is a series of essays embracing the history of drama theater, the history of folk lyrics, the history of epics, the history of folk tales, the history of a novel, historiography, etc., and with each essay something like a historical reader (Florilegio) on this type of literature. Essays of unequal dignity (the best: “Storia della poesia epica” and “Storia delle novelline popolari”); textbooks almost always present interesting and for Italians new material. Of his historical and literary monographs, more important than others are Alessandro Manzoni (1878), Manzoni ed il Fauriel (1880) and his explanations for The Divine Comedy for Italian youth. On folklore, the most interesting material and conclusions are presented by Storia comparata degli usi nuziali (1869), Storia comparata degli usi funebri (1873), and Storia comparata degli usi natalizii (1878). In Hindu and comparative mythology, it is more important than others: “La Vita ed i miracoli del Dio Indranel Rigveda” (1866), “Zoological Mythology” (1872; in Russian, the presentation and analysis of A. N. Veselovsky in the “Bulletin of Europe”, 1873, No. 10 - “Comparative mythology and its method”), “Mythologie des Plantes” (1878–80), “Letture sopra la Mitologia Vedica” (1874). For indo-science are also important: "Letteratura indiana" (1883) and "Peregrinazioni indiani" (1886-1887). In the Herald of Europe Gubernatis posted correspondence from Florence and other articles (Sketches of Italian Society, Francesco Petrarch and his Anniversary).
