Range

It is found in most European countries, in the Afro-tropical ecozone, in the eastern Palaearctic , in the Middle East and North Africa .

Description

One of the largest species of orthoptera in Europe. Adult males reach a length of 30–55 mm, females 65–70 mm.

 
Anacridium aegyptium Head

Body color is gray, brown or olive. Shins of hind legs blue, hips orange. The hips of the back pair of legs have characteristic dark markings. They are easily identified by the characteristic vertical black and white stripes in the eyes. Wings are small with dark spots.

Species biology

The species is not a pest of crops. Adults are found in August and September, in warm and dry places. After mating, they hibernate. In spring, females lay eggs in the soil. Larvae appear in April. Their color ranges from yellow to bright green.
