Nordenskjöld, Erland

Baron Erland Nordensköld ( Swede. Nils Erland Herbert Nordenskiöld ; July 19, 1877 , Stockholm - July 5, 1932 , Gothenburg ) - Swedish archaeologist, ethnographer and anthropologist. His studies were devoted to ethnography and the prehistoric period of South America.

Born in a baronial family, his father was Adolf Eric Nordensjöld .

Educated in Uppsala, in 1906-1908 he was an employee of the Museum of Natural History in Stockholm. In 1913, he was appointed director of the ethnographic department of the Gothenburg Museum. Before that, for several years he traveled to the countries of South America and collected collections for museums in Stockholm. He visited Patagonia in 1899, the north of Argentina and Bolivia in 1901-1902, Peru and Bolivia in 1904-1905, Bolivia in 1908-1909, and the internal regions of South America in 1913. In 1918, he actively participated in the recruitment of Swedish volunteers who went to the civil war in Finland, and was awarded the Class III Freedom Cross.

In 1912, he received the Lubat Prize and Wahlberg Gold Medal. In addition to numerous articles in scientific periodicals, he wrote the following works: Från högfjäll och urskogar (1902); Indianlif i el gran chaco (1910); Indianer och hoita (1911); Sydamerikas indianer (1912).
