Biography
Born in Courland Province . Having received the title of pharmaceutical assistant in Dorpat , he was determined in 1831 to be a laboratory assistant at the chemical laboratory of the Moscow branch of the Medical and Surgical Academy . Here he received the title of pharmacist in 1835 , and in 1839 - the title of pharmacist of the 1st rank.
In 1838 he transferred to the chemical laboratory of the University of Dorpat . For some time he worked at the Department of Chemistry of Moscow University [1] .
In 1861 he settled in Pyatigorsk , where he was a member of the civil administration of the medical unit in the Caucasus. Schmidt was in charge of the mineral water laboratory. In addition to analyzes of all sources, the rest of the chemical side of the water device was created with the participation of Schmidt. His analyzes and studies were published in the bulletins of the Society of Naturalists and in the Collection of Analysis of Caucasian Mineral Waters. Under the guidance and on behalf of the creator of Russian balneology S. A. Smirnov, he was actively engaged in research and analysis of the healing properties of the water of the Gryaznushka River [2] .
Schmidt owns up to 40 scientific papers in German (a detailed list of Schmidt’s works was placed in the Lomonosov Collection, Moscow, 1901, where his biography is also published), as well as several works in Russian, including: “Tables of analyzes Zheleznovodsk sources "(Notes of the Russian Balneological Society, III, issue 2, appendix. Pyatigorsk, 1869)," Analysis of Gryaznushki "(Notes of the Russian Balneological Society, IV, 1866-1870. Pyatigorsk, 1870) and" Analyzes of Caucasian Mineral Waters "(Pyatigorsk , 1876) [3] and others.
