Biography
Sergei Nesterov was born on April 25, 1922 in the village of Dmynichi (now the Monastyrshchinsky district of the Smolensk region ). After graduating from seven grades of the school, he worked first on a collective farm , then on a general education school. In July 1941, Nesterov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . Since April 1942 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. In one of the battles he was shell-shocked [1] .
By July 1944, the guard sergeant Sergei Nesterov was commanding an armored personnel carrier of a separate reconnaissance unit of the 20th Guards Mechanized Brigade ( 8th Guards Mechanized Corps , 1st Guards Tank Army , 1st Ukrainian Front ). He distinguished himself during the liberation of the Lviv region of the Ukrainian SSR and Poland . In the second half of July 1944, during reconnaissance in the enemy rear area near the village of Ksaveruvka (now Romanovka, Sokalsky district, Lviv region), a reconnaissance group led by Nesterov defeated the headquarters of the Wehrmacht artillery regiment, destroying more than 20 enemy soldiers and officers and seizing important documents. During the battle near the village of Potuzhitsa (now Gotoritsa ), Nesterov personally blew up a German bunker with grenades. July 29, 1944 Nesterov crossed the Vistula River north of the city of Baranow Sandomierski and took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead on its western shore [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 23, 1944, for "exemplary fulfillment of command assignments and shown courage and heroism in battles with the German invaders" of the guard, senior sergeant Sergei Nesterov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal for number 5254 [1] .
In December 1945, Nesterov graduated from the Ulyanovsk Tank School , in 1947 - advanced training courses for command personnel. In 1967, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived and worked in Nizhny Novgorod . He died of blood cancer on July 27, 1999 (consequences of participating in the tests of the first atomic bomb in 1949 ), was buried in the Red Etna cemetery in Nizhny Novgorod [1] .
Rewards
He was also awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and two orders of the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .
