Biography
In the first musical specialty trumpeter . Since 1945 he studied at the Dresden Conservatory with Fidelio Finke . At the end of the conservatory in 1949 , he took over the post of musical director of city theaters. In 1960 , he transferred to the position of conductor at the Dresden Opera , in 1971 - 1983 . Director General of Dresden. Since 1976 , he taught at the Dresden Higher School of Music , and since 1979, a professor. Since 1984 , he worked in Berlin, conductor of the German State Opera . Among the most important productions of Kurtz, in addition to the standard repertoire, are “ Moses and Aaron ” by Arnold Schoenberg and “Levin's Mill” by Udo Zimmerman .
In the 1950s and 70s Kurtz also worked fruitfully as a composer (after 1975, he practically abandoned the composition due to an increase in conductor's demand). He owns three symphonies and other orchestral music, piano, violin and horn concerts, two string quartets and other compositions. Kurtz’s music absorbed a certain influence of Bela Bartok and quarter-tone technique .
In 1976 and 1988 Kurtz’s work as a conductor was awarded the National Prize of the GDR .
