Linda Morabito ( Eng. Linda Morabito , November 21, 1953 , Vancouver , Canada ), also known as Linda Kelly ( Eng. Linda Kelly ), Linda Hyder ( Eng. Linda Hyder ) and Linda Morabito-Mayer ( Eng. Linda Morabito- Meyer ), an astronomer who discovered volcanic activity on Io , the satellite of Jupiter , on March 9, 1979 at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory . At the time of the discovery, she worked as an image processing engineer for the optical navigation system (ONIPS) of the Voyager navigation team. When analyzing the images obtained by the Voyager-1 probe for navigating spacecraft, she discovered a cloud with a height of 270 kilometers. It was later proved that it is of volcanic origin [1] (emissions from the Pele volcano). This was the first case of the discovery of active volcanism outside the Earth. This discovery, according to some experts, is the largest event of the planet research program, completed in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The International Astronomical Union named in her honor the asteroid .
