Joseph Oller ( Cat. Josep Oller i Roca ) ( 1839 - 1922 ) - Spanish entrepreneur and entrepreneur who lived in Paris for most of his life. He founded the cabaret Moulin Rouge [1] and was the inventor of the tote [2] [3] [4] .
Biography
Born in the Terrace. Joseph Oller emigrated to France with his family as a child. He later returned to Spain to study at a university in Bilbao . There he fell in love with cockfighting and began his career as a bookmaker .
In Paris in 1867, Joseph Oller invented a new betting method, which he called Pari Mutuel. He successfully introduced his system on French racing tracks. However, in 1874, Joseph Oller was sentenced to fifteen days in prison and a fine for illegal gambling. Later, in 1891, the French authorities legalized their system and banned fixed betting odds.
In 1870, he moved to London for a while to avoid the Franco-Prussian war. There he came into contact with the world of the scene.
Since 1876, Joseph Oller focused on the entertainment industry. For the first time he opened various audiences and places. But this was in 1889, when he and his companion Charles Sidler discovered the famous Moulin Rouge [1] [3] [5] . The opening of the Moulin Rouge cabaret , which was conceived as the "world's first palace of women and the most grandiose temple of dance", was timed to coincide with the start of the World Exhibition in Paris and the completion of the Eiffel Tower [6] . Four years later, he opened the first Parisian music hall : Paris Olympia .
He was buried in the Pere Lachaise cemetery .
