Biography
Born on February 25, 1913 in the village of Kolomiytsy [1] in a peasant family. He graduated from junior high school. He worked as deputy chairman of the village council. In 1935 he was drafted into the Red Army . In 1938 he graduated from the Vladivostok Military Infantry School.
Great Patriotic War
On the front - from November 1941. In 1942 he graduated from the courses "Shot" . He fought in the West (from September 1941), Kalinin (from August 1942), Steppe (from March 1943) fronts.
Distinguished when crossing the river Dnieper . On the night of September 26, 1943, the battalion of Captain Shcherbina’s Guard forced the Dnieper, seized a bridgehead on the right bank of the Dnieper near the village of Borodaevka . Storm captured the northern outskirts of Borodaevka and command height northwest of Borodaevka. During the day, the battalion firmly held its positions, reflecting 12 enemy counterattacks, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy [2] .
Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated February 22, 1944 for exemplary performance of combat missions of the Command when crossing the Dnieper River, developing combat successes on the right bank of the river and showing courage and heroism of the Guard to Captain Shcherbin Vasily Illarionovich awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union awarding the Order of Lenin and Gold Star Medals [3] .
Post-war time
In 1948 he graduated from the Frunze Military Academy , in 1957 - Higher Academic Courses at the Academy. He was a teacher of the Academy. Since 1972, Major General Shcherbina - in stock. He lived in Kiev .
He died on May 5, 1994. Buried in Kiev at the Forest cemetery .
