St. Nicholas Cathedral (Greifswald) - is the highest religious building built in the style of brick Gothic architecture in the historical center of the university and Hanseatic cities of Greifswald . The church is named after St. Nicholas , considered the patron saint of sailors and merchants. It is no coincidence that it is popularly called the “long Nikolaus”: the tower of this cathedral, one hundred meters high [1], rises above the silhouette of the old part of the city and is one of the most striking symbols of the city in northeast Germany.
History
St. Nicholas Cathedral was built between 1250 and 1410. In 1456, the foundation of the University of Greifswald took place here. This medieval cathedral is also known for the fact that it was here in 1774 that the famous German artist and the most famous Greifswald native Caspar David Friedrich was baptized [2] . The modern tower of the cathedral is a 17th-century building. It is made in the Dutch Baroque style after the original Gothic building collapsed twice as a result of strong assaults [3] .
