Narcine brevilabiata

Narcine brevilabiata (lat.) - a species of stingrays of the genus Narcine of the lat family . Narcinidae squad electric stingrays . These are cartilaginous fish leading a bottom lifestyle, with large, flattened pectoral and ventral fins in the form of a disk, a pronounced tail and two dorsal fins. They are able to generate electric current. They inhabit the northwestern and northeastern parts of the Pacific Ocean to a depth of 49 m [1] . The maximum recorded length is 25.7 cm [2] .

Taxonomy

The species was first scientifically described in 1966 [3] . The holotype is lost. The specific name comes from the words lat. brevis - "short" and lat. labium is the β€œlip” [4] and is explained by the fact that the skin lobes surrounding the nostrils of these skates are shorter than the narcine Narcine prodorsalis described by the same author [5] . Perhaps this species is synonymous with spotted daffodils .

Range

Narcine brevilabiata live in the northwestern and northeastern Pacific Ocean off the coast of China, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. These slopes are found in shallow water to a depth of 49 m, and according to other sources, from 41 to 70 m in the open sea on the continental shelf [2] .

Description

These ramps have oval and rounded thoracic and abdominal discs and a short tail. There are two dorsal fins. At the base of the pectoral fins, electric paired organs in the form of kidneys, which stretch along the body to the end of the disk, peep through the skin before the eyes [6] . The length of the tail does not exceed the length of the disk. The first dorsal fin is larger than the second. The anterior part of the ventral fins is expanded in the form of two lobes, while the hind margins are concave. Dental strips look like triangles, upper wider than lower. The dorsal surface of the body is covered with small dark spots; there are several large marks. The tail is also spotted [7] [8] .

Biology

Daffodils are benthic marine fish; they breed by egg-production , embryos hatch from eggs in the womb [6] . The size of sexually mature males varies depending on the habitat. In the Gulf of Thailand, this length is 23 cm, and in the waters of Vietnam 25.7 cm [2] .

Human Interaction

These stingrays are not of interest to commercial fishing. Active fishing is carried out in their area, therefore they are caught as by- catch in the commercial shrimp fishing by trawling. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has assigned this species the status of β€œVulnerable” [2] .
