Chernukhinsky district was formed in January 1935 as part of the Gorky Territory.
The district includes the following territories:
- from Arzamas district : Volchikhinsky, Kovaksinsky, Lomovsky, Motovilovsky, St. Petersburg, Pustynsky, Selemsky, Selyakinsky, Chernukhinsky s / s
- from Dalnekonstantinovsky district : Surovatihinsky c / s.
Simultaneously, a Christmas s / s was formed from a part of Surovatikhinsky s / s.
In 1936, Chernukhinsky district became part of the Gorky region. In March of the same year, Surovatikhinsky s / s was transferred to the Dalokonstantinovsky district.
In September 1940, the Christmas s / s was divided between the Volchikhinsky s / s and the Surovatikhinsky s / s of the Dalnekonstantinovsky district.
In April 1949, Selyakinsky s / s was transferred to Mukhtolovsky district .
In January 1954, Chernukhinsky district became part of the Arzamas region.
In June 1954, the St. Petersburg s / s was added to Lomovsky.
In April 1957 Chernukhinsky district returned to the Gorky region.
In April 1963, Chernukhinsky district was abolished, and its territory was transferred to the Arzamas district.
