Petryaksinsky district was formed in November 1944 as part of the Gorky region.
The structure of the district included Bolsherybushkinsky, Krasnoostrovsky, Krasnogorsk, Medyansky, Novomochaleevsky, Ovechievrazhsky, Petryaksinsky, Chembileevsky s / s transferred from the Krasnooktyabrsky district .
In January 1954, the Petryaksinsky district was transferred to the Arzamas region.
In June 1954, Medyansky s / s was annexed to Chembileevsky, and Ovechievrazhsky to Bolsherybushkinsky.
In April 1957, the Petryaksinsky district was returned to the Gorky region.
In November 1957, the Petryaksinsky district was abolished, and its territory was transferred to the Krasnooktyabrsky district.
