Biography
Lev Segalovich was born on September 25, 1916 in Kherson , but soon his parents decided to move to Kharkov . He grew up in a working family with many children, from childhood he was fond of sports, at school he played volleyball, did gymnastics. Later he entered the Kharkov Institute of Chemical Technology, but after some time he attracted the attention of boxing trainers and after the first year he transferred to the Kiev State Institute of Physical Culture , which he graduated in 1938. He was trained under the guidance of the honored trainer of the Ukrainian SSR, candidate of pedagogical sciences Mikhail Ivanovich Romanenko [1] .
At first he played for the sports society "Builder", then for many years he represented various army teams. He achieved his first serious success in the ring in 1936, when he won first place in the Ukrainian championship in Odessa (he remained in this rank for six consecutive years, defeating all the strongest boxers of the republic). In addition, in 1938 he took third place in the classification of the All-Union Championship and received a gold medal at the championship of the sports associations of trade unions, while in 1940 he won the USSR title for the first time.
Due to the outbreak of World War II, he was forced to interrupt his sports career, volunteered to enlist in the army. At first he served in the evacuation hospital, then as an instructor in ski and physical training, as a platoon commander of a training battalion. Since 1943 - at the front. In 1944, while on an advanced training course for officers in Podolsk, he was recalled along with other boxers to participate in the USSR Championship. He won this tournament and subsequently held the championship title for five seasons [2] .
Segalovich, being left-handed, boxed in a left-handed stance. Usually, he unexpectedly for the enemy shifted to the left, making a bias to the left and transferring body weight to the left leg. Thus, he created a convenient starting position for applying a left side strike or a left bottom strike. After this, the boxer without delay took a step forward with his right and left foot, which overtook the right one, and struck a side blow with his left to the head or left hit from the bottom in the body. Currently, these techniques are called jump strikes or double strides. [3]
He also participated in match meetings with the national teams of Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and Poland, in 1946 he won the All-Slavic tournament in Prague. At the 1949 Championship of the Soviet Union in Kaunas, he took second place, losing leadership to the young and promising Anatoly Bulakov . In 1950, at the national championship in Sverdlovsk, he again met in the final with Bulakov, tried to take revenge from him, but lost again. In total, his track record has 128 fights, of which 121 ended in victory. For his sporting achievements he was awarded the title of Honored Master of Sports and recognized as an outstanding boxer of the USSR .
After completing his sports career in 1951, Segalovich switched to coaching. For many years he worked as a coach in the boxing team of CSKA, raised many talented fighters, among them the country's champions, prize-winners and winners of various international tournaments. His most famous student, Vyacheslav Lemeshev, became the Olympic champion and two-time European champion - for the training of this athlete in 1972 he was awarded the honorary title “Honored Trainer of the USSR”.
He died on March 27, 2001, was buried at the Vagankovsky cemetery in Moscow, plot No. 12 “A”.
Mentioned in the television series “ The meeting place cannot be changed ” and the novel “ Era of Mercy ”, where photographer Grisha Ushivin boasts: “I have a 95 kg right punch. Segalovich himself refused to meet with me. ” However, this is nothing more than his fantasy, because he is a famous inventor.
