Nikberg, Ilya Isaevich

Born on November 19, 1929 in Kiev , in the family of the lawyer-economist I.M. Nikberg (1899-1980) and the secretary-typist B.A. Kharshan (1908-1979). In 1952 he graduated with honors from the Kiev Medical Institute . He combined his studies with active work in scientific circles, was the chairman of the faculty and a member of the bureau of the institute student scientific society. Awarded the Certificate of Merit of the Central Committee of the Komsomol of Ukraine (1952). Since 1952 - medical, professional and social activities in Makeevka , Chisinau , Kiev and Sydney .

Scientific research of I.I. Nikberg is devoted to relevant related problems of preventive and therapeutic medicine (issues of the theory and history of medicine, methodological aspects of its teaching, the environmental impact on human health, hygiene of medical institutions, medical bioclimatology and heliometeorology, preventive diabetology, etc.). Research results on these and other issues are reflected in a number of journal articles and books.

Teaching work

Over the 40-year period of teaching, he proved himself as a lecturer and methodologist, author of textbooks and teaching aids. He developed and introduced more than 30 new lectures and practical exercises into the educational process. He proposed and implemented the implementation of the course work by individual graduate students of the Faculty of Medicine “Individual hygienic recommendations for the patient according to the regime of labor, life and nutrition”. He was involved (1994-1998) in the Central Methodological Office for Higher Medical Education of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. Together with prof. R. D. Gabovich developed a program to improve the pedagogical qualifications of teachers of hygiene at universities and medical schools. For over 25 years, he oversaw the conduct of teacher training courses, the students of which were about 500 assistants, associate professors, professors, heads of departments of medical institutes from all the republics of the former USSR and teachers of hygiene at medical schools in Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova. He was a member of the Central Methodological Commission of the University, was in charge of the faculty’s teaching room, and was a member of the Academic Councils of the Faculty of Medicine and Prevention and the Faculty of Continuing Education of Teachers. He devoted considerable attention to scientific and educational contacts with students, actively attracted them to scientific work, and led a scientific student circle. After graduating from the institute, more than 40 former circle members of I.I. Nikberg became candidates and doctors of sciences, professors, headed departments of research institutes and departments of medical institutes in various medical specialties.

Work in the field of preventive diabetology

He was the initiator of the creation (1988) and the first chairman of the Ukrainian Republican Society for the Promotion of Diabetes, Vice-President (1996-2000) of the Ukrainian Diabetes Federation, scientific editor of the magazines Diabetes and Diabetes and Life (1992-2000). He headed (1994-1999) the Center for training and self-control of patients with diabetes at the Research Institute of Endocrinology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (Kiev). He participated in the creation of the “National program to combat diabetes,” and a number of other activities in the field of diabetes prevention and treatment. He repeatedly gave popular lectures on diabetes, conducted the School of Diabetes Patients, published a number of articles and books on the prevention and treatment of diabetes.

After retiring (2000), for family reasons, he moved to the city of Sydney (Australia). In contact with colleagues in the countries of the former USSR, he continues his active creative work as a promoter of medical knowledge and a medical publicist of Russian and Ukrainian media in Australia, Russia, Ukraine and Germany. From 2000 to 2018, he wrote and published more than 100 scientific and popular articles and 7 books. He has repeatedly given lectures and talks in Russian and Ukrainian, including on the Australian SBS-radio.
