Origin
in the XVIII century. - the name of the dark brown color of the fabric with white dots produced in the village of Marengo in northern Italy. In France - marengo ou brun ("Marengo, or brown"), in Russia - "chestnut Marengo". After the battle of Marengo on June 14, 1800, in which Napoleon Bonaparte's troops inflicted a crushing defeat on the Austrian army, they began to refer to gray or black fabric interspersed with white or gray thread (which is typical for homespun fabric). This color was associated with the gray cloth of Bonaparte's overcoat and became fashionable for a short while. In Russia, the beginning of the XIX century. the name "Marengo-claire" (French. marengo clair - "light Marengo") was fixed, that is, light gray.
Application
Marengo color was used in Soviet uniforms.
“In 1921, it was approved [uniform] of military sailors: for commanding officers, a cap and a winter hat, a coat (since 1925 an overcoat) the color of Marengo, a jacket and trousers of black color, a dark blue and white tunic; for Red Navy sailors - a cap-cap, a coat (since 1925) an overcoat of the color Marengo, a black pea coat, a dark blue flannel and white shirt with a blue collar, a vest, black trousers and work clothes of blue color [1] .
