Biography

He was born on July 6, 1937 in the family of Catherine and Pavel Derevyank - Poltava by origin. He had four brothers and a sister.

In 1943, his family arrived at work in Germany and lived at the end of the war in a camp for displaced people in the city of Kornberg until his departure in Belgium in 1947. From a young age he took an active part in parish life.

In the village for miners in Zvartberg in eastern Belgium, Ivan Derevyanka studied at a Ukrainian public school, then at a Belgian high school in the city of Genk , and after graduation he studied mathematics at the University of Louvain .

After that he worked as an employee. In 1966, he married Vera Bachinskaya.

Protopresbyter Ivan Bachinsky quickly prepared for pastoral service under the guidance of his father-in-law.

On July 20, 1980, in Landshut, he was ordained deacon by Archbishop Orest (Ivanyuk) , and on September 19, 1982, he was ordained priest by Archbishop Anatoly (Dubliansky) in the city of Genk and fed the Ukrainian communities in Belgium .

After the repose of his wife, on September 26, 1989, at the Metropolitan residence of South Bound Brook, New Jersey, he was tonsured a monk by the Metropolitan of the UOC in the United States, Mstislav (Skrypnik) with the name John, and the next day he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite .
