In 2008, First Word Records released the double single "Window 23" / "The Great White Whale", which was the result of a collaboration with Gavin Castleton. In 2010, Stateless signed a contract with independent label Ninja Tune , under the auspices of which February 21, 2011, the second full-length album Matilda was released. To promote it, two singles were released (“Ariel” and “Assassinations”), as well as a mini-album I'm on Fire EP . Currently the team is working on the creation of a third LP .
The group is usually compared with the work of bands such as Radiohead and Portishead , and their first full-length album with the early Coldplay . In addition, Stateless formed their own sound from different musical styles, ranging from classical music to psychedelic rock , from dancehall - reggae to hip hop , influenced by artists such as DJ Shadow , Autechre and Bjork .
History
Formation and early years (2002–2004)
The group was formed in 2002 in the city of Leeds , West Yorkshire [4] . Chris James, James Sterdy and John Taylor played rock bands together for several years [4] . Deciding that this more traditional style does not give them a proper call, they began to expand their own musical tastes and inspirations with sample - based electronics and hip-hop [4] . For some time they decided to completely abandon the use of guitars in writing music, trying to direct the sound to a completely new direction [4] [5] . Their enthusiasm for hip-hop led to an acquaintance with DJ kidkanevil (Gerard Roberts) in one of the nightclubs of Leeds [4] . James met Scott Rod Buchanan-Dunlop [6] at the university on his first day in music engineering and sound technology at Leeds City School of Technology. Later, Buchanan-Dunlop joined the group as a programmer and Stateless became a quintet .
In February 2003, they released their first demo tape , including early versions of the songs "Exit" and "Prism # 1" [7] and recorded in the studio of Leeds School [4] [8] . Later that year, they sent a demo to the BBC Radio 1 OneMusic show [4] [7] . Two months after the online premiere of the first recording, “Exit” was played on the evening show of Colin Murray as part of the program "Famous for 15 seconds" [7] . Having received a large number of votes from OneMusic users, Stateless got into the top ten of the demo section of Steve Lamak [7] . “Prism # 1” eventually ended up on the July “unsigned list” of OneMusic [4] as one of the six groups selected by national vote [9] , and for the next two weeks was on the “C” playlist BBC Radio 1. This Aroused the interest of managers of several recording companies of independent and major labels , including a branch of Virgin Records Radiate and Sony Music [4] [7] [10] .
Label Contract and The Bloodstream EP
Stateless began working with manager Martin Hall from Sanctuary Artist Management (known for working with Groove Armada , Manic Street Preachers ) [4] [7] [10] and in 2004 signed a contract for five albums with Sony Music [7] [8] . For six weeks, they recorded material under the direction of producer Jim Ebbiss (worked with Kasabian , Arctic Monkeys ) in the famous studio Rockfield in the city of Monmouth [11] . On April 3, 2004, a limited edition (one thousand copies of a CD and seven-inch vinyl ) was released on the first single of the group, “Down Here” [12] , with the studio version of the song “Horizon” as a B-side , as well as a video clip of the same name in his support Stateless also re-recorded the song "Prism # 1" and made it available for download from their website [12] . Later that year, they gave concerts at Homelands and V festivals and also performed at the opening of the Kosheen band on their UK tour [11] . An early version of the song "Exit" was included in the soundtrack for the video game Driv3r [13] . When Sony teamed up with BMG , the band’s contract with the label was automatically canceled [14] . The loss of the contract, according to James, “became for the group not so much a blow as a relief” [6] [11] . “We were more focused on creativity than on earnings. All we wanted was to write music, they just wanted to make a profit. ” [15]
Later released for free download from the site Stateless collection with recorded live and unmixed studio versions of songs "Down Here", "Horizon" and "Running Out", made between November 2003 and March 2004, as well as a video clip shot by kidkanevil. On April 30, 2005, a live performance at a student union of Leeds City University Stateless collected 1,250 pounds in support of Amnesty International [16] .
On July 25, 2005, the band released The Bloodstream EP via Regal Recordings , a subsidiary of Parlophone . Recording with Stateless, Abbiss simultaneously worked with DJ Shadow on the next album of his project UNKLE [11] [17] and let him listen to a few of their songs. After that, DJ Shadow became a fan of their work, saying that the stateless mini-album “is close to perfection, which I have not heard for a long time." [18] In June 2005, he invited James to collaborate on his new album. Shadow met with Chris in London, gave a demo of his recordings and a week to write the lyrics, after which the two were to meet in the studio [19] . The collaboration resulted in recordings of the songs “Erase You” and “You Made It”, which were released on the album DJ Shadow The Outsider . James, as a guest vocalist, joined him on a 2006 tour, playing 90 performances in 17 countries [20] [21] . In early 2006, David Levine (drums) and Justin Percival (bass guitar, backing vocals ) replaced James Sterdy (drums, piano, strings ) and John Taylor (bass guitar, keyboards, guitar) who left the band [22] . Percival and Taylor have been James's school buddies since they were 13 years old and have been playing various rock, metal , funk , and soul bands for a while. In November of the same year, Stateless played 14 shows [20] on the opening tour of DJ Shadow in the UK [11] [17] .
New record label and Stateless (2006–2008)
In November 2006, Stateless signed a new contract with the Berlin electronic label ! K7 Records [11] . On May 14, 2007, the single “Exit” was released with B-side “Hurricane”. July 16 was released the first studio album called Stateless . Two-thirds of the album were recorded and produced by Jim Ebiss and contain all the songs released previously on The Bloodstream EP and the first single "Down Here". The rest of the material was prepared by the group itself; as a result, the first half of the songs was recorded at Rockfield Studios, the other - at their home studio in Leeds [11] . In July of the same year, the second single from the album, “Prism # 1” [23] , was released, accompanied by a clip that was nominated for the “Newcomer” award of the mtvU channel [24] . On October 29, Bloodstream was released - the third and final single from the album, as well as a video for it.
Stateless received a rotation on BBC radio stations, and DJ BBC 6 Music Zayn Lowe he put both singles and album songs (“This Language”) [6] . The album covers and singles were developed by London-based design company Non-Format. “Exit” was used in the fourth season of the series “ CSI: Crime Scene New York ” in the episode “Down the Rabbit Hole” [25] , “Bloodstream” was featured in the film Sergio Rubini “Impact of the Eye” [26] and in the series “Flight Risk "of the seventh season of the series" CSI: Miami Crime Scene " [27] . A remixed and updated version of Bloodstream was included in the soundtrack for the first season of the Vampire Diaries series [28] .
In 2006, collaboration with singer-songwriter Gavin Castleton resulted in the release of the double single “Window 23” / “The Great White Whale” with his additional vocals [20] . However, due to the fact that the! K7 label was aimed at promoting the debut album and its singles, “Window 23” / “The Great White Whale” was released only on July 20, 2008 via First Word Records (the label on which kidkanevil released four solo album).
Only by releasing the debut disc, Stateless began to write material to the new full-length work [29] . In the autumn of 2007 and in 2008, the group played live shows at several festivals, as well as acoustic sets across the UK and in Europe [6] [26] . The songs from the upcoming album (“Junior” and “Whiter Than Snow”) were presented to the public already on this tour [30] . In March 2008, they were supposed to give their first overseas performance at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas , however, they were forced to cancel it [31] .
Matilda (2011 — present)
The material of the new album was first presented at several live performances during 2008. The recording of the second studio work began in London in September of the same year [32] . The producer was Damien Taylor, whom James met at the Bjork concert. The recording turned out to be difficult, as the group worked in London, and Taylor was in Vancouver . “I think I have become too obsessed,” the vocalist admits, “I developed insomnia . I literally couldn't stop thinking about recording. It was completely unhealthy and this period of time was a bit gloomy. ” Toward the end of 2009, James flew to Vancouver and the final recording and mixing of the album was made there. [14] In December 2009, Buchanan-Dunlop left the band to start a new career, leaving the Stateless Quartet .
In 2010, Stateless signed a contract with London label Ninja Tune . The official release of the album Matilda took place on February 21, 2011. In support of his were released two singles: "Ariel" [33] and "Assassinations" [34] . In the song “Visions”, Percival’s vocals were played for the first time, and the Balanescu Quartet [15] [35] took part in the recording of “Ballad of NGB” and DJ Shadow’s “Song for the Outsider”. On February 8, the band performed at the HMV's Next Big Thing festival [36] , and also gave several concerts in Europe.
I'm on Fire EP with remixes for the title song from the artists Ninja Tune Slugabed and Blue Daisy [37] [38] , as well as the version of “Bloodstream” recorded together with the Balanescu string quartet [39] . The composition “ I'm On Fire ” James performs as a duet with Shary Warden (My Brightest Diamond) [40] , whom they met in 2008 at a television show in Manchester [41] and which later participated in the filming of the video for the song [42] . On September 16, 2011, Stateless together with the Balanescu Quartet gave a concert in the Union Chapel Church in London [43] [44] .
In 2012, instrumental versions of the songs Ariel and Miles to Go were used as the soundtrack for the Sleeping Dogs video game [45] .
In 2013, the band began recording their third album at studios in Berlin, with Damien Taylor and Kuesa Darko (Blue Daisy) as producers. In parallel with this, James began work on a solo career and his own album, recorded by the Balanescu quartet. In November 2013, the musician laid out the song “The Force (Song for Dylan)” dedicated to Dylan Thomas [46] . Release of both albums is scheduled for 2014 [21] [46] .
Musical style
Style and main influences
The style of the group is often described as the intersection of Radiohead and DJ Shadow [47] [48] music, also reminiscent of such bands as Portishead , Coldplay , UNKLE and Massive Attack [11] [49] . At the beginning of the formation of their own sound, the group looked back at the Britpop - movement and other guitar groups [10] . Despite this traditional rock lineage, Stateless was greatly influenced by electronic and dance music, hip-hop and trip-hop [11] . From the very beginning, the group decided to abandon guitars and focused on using players and samplers on a regular basis along with keyboards , bass guitars and drums to create their own sound [11] .
The confusion of several musical styles and the variety of projects that have influenced Stateless make it difficult to determine the exact genre or scene. The musicians themselves do not try to limit themselves to the framework of a single genre [29] . Such a creative approach to writing music, as David Levin says, is directly reflected in the name of the group: “in the musical sense, we do not have citizenship (stateless), that is, we do not belong to any particular genre)” [11] . Chris James claims that their name reflects what their work belongs to: “Basically, it means freedom. We want to be free from musical barriers, boundaries and frames ” [11] and that it“ reflects our feelings about our way of writing music. There are no borders, no cells, and no rules ” [29] .
Stateless claim to have formed their own sound from different styles, ranging from classical music to psychedelic rock , from dancehall reggae to hip hop and electronic music Warp Records and similar labels [11] [50] . Different musical preferences of the band members, in their opinion, had a decisive influence [11] . In particular, among the artists they call Radiohead, DJ Shadow and his critically acclaimed album Endtroducing ..... [15] , Massive Attack, Autechre [22] , Bjork [11] and Aphex Twin [10] . The vocals of Chris James and, in particular, his falsetto are often compared with the works of Tom York , Jeff Buckley , and sometimes mistaken for Chris Martin 's voice from Coldplay [50] [51] . When asked about such associations, he ignores immediate comparisons: “I have sung all my life. I never wanted to base the work of some other vocalist and I definitely didn’t want to sound exactly like anyone else ” [52] . James himself claims that Nina Simone , Jeff Buckley, Otis Redding , and vocalists from the world of rap music had a significant influence on him [6] .
Writing music and lyrics
While James is the main songwriter, all members of the band take part in writing music. Percival also wrote lyrics to some of the songs of Matilda’s second studio album [11] . Stateless says that writing a song usually starts with James playing the piano or one of the band members programming a rhythm . They argue that in writing they attach great importance to the rhythmic pattern of music [5] , but they pay no less attention to lyrics and melodies: “We try to achieve harmony,” explains James, “in which lyrics and melody are as important as rhythm and electronics. Now there are many different instruments for the production of music, but not all of them suggest the presence of texts and vocals, we are closing the gap between the two worlds ” [15] .
The group set out to demonstrate the diversity of lyrical themes on the eponymous debut album, as James said: “We were inspired by some dreams, dreams, blurring the boundaries between reality and fantasy. "This Language" is an anti-war song, "Exit" is just an explosion, and "Bluetrace" is psychedelic, its second half is like a primal cry. We just wanted to make some serious noise! ” [6] As for the second album, Stateless set out to grow up and increase their sense of self-awareness, and also focus less on“ quarrels and the like ”and more on“ desires, searches, love, life, death, magic, lust and forgiveness, ”according to James. “We also developed our own off-stage relationships. We had fun with this album because it was like the five best friends playing in the studio ” [52] .
