Biography
Originally from the island of Samos [1] . May 19, 1875 becomes the patriarch of Jerusalem [2] .
Under him, the internal troubles in the Jerusalem Church continued, so the patriarch used a lot of efforts to pacify his flock. The main unrest concerned the Bulgarian issue , in which the patriarch took the side of the Greek fanariots , recognizing the Council of Constantinople in 1872 [3] . This position was contrary to the policy of Russia, which contributed to his occupation of the Patriarchal throne [4] .
At the same time, the Russian government confiscated the grave estates in Bessarabia and the Caucasus , believing that they were not being properly managed; this greatly undermined the financial situation of the patriarchy, in particular, the Theological School of the Holy Cross was closed (it was restored in 1881, when the Russian government returned the confiscated possessions to the Patriarchate) [3] .
He died in June 23, 1882 [2] .
