Nome ( eng. Nome Census Area ) is a census area , a unit of territorial division of the US state of Alaska . The population according to the 2010 census is 9492 people [1] . The zone is part of the unorganized boro and therefore does not have an administrative center.
Geography
The territory of the census zone is 73,240 km² , of which 59,470 km² is land and 13,770 km² (18.8%) are open water spaces [2] . The zone includes St. Lawrence Island and Kruzenshtern Island .
The zone is bordered in the north by the Northwest-Arctic boro, in the east by the Yukon-Koyukuk zone , and in the south by the Wade Hampton zone. In the west it is washed by the waters of the Bering Sea , the Bering Strait and Norton Bay.
Population
According to the 2000 census [3] , the population of the zone is 9196 people. The population density is 0.15 people / km². The racial makeup of the zone includes 19.32% white ; 0.38% Black or African American ; 75.20% Native Americans ; 0.67% Asian ; 0.02% of Pacific Islanders ; 0.20% of other races and 4.21% of two or more races. 1.00% of all races are Hispanic . 16.32% of the population of the zone speak Yupika languages at home; 8.75% in Inuit languages and another 2.02% of the population in Eskimo (this term includes both Yupik and Inuit languages) [4] .
Of the 2,693 households, 45.8% have children under the age of 18, 42.4% are married couples living together, 15.3% are women living without husbands, and 29.5% have no family. 23.2% of all households are composed of separate residents; 3.3% of households are single people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 3.33, and the average family size was 4.01.
37.1% of the population is under the age of 18; 9.3% from 18 to 24 years; 29.0% from 25 to 44 years; 18.6% from 45 to 64 years old and 5.9% aged 65 years and older. The average age of the population is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 117.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 122.7 males.
