He lived most of his life in his native city, where he was engaged in legal practice (received a law degree, despite the desire of his parents to see him as a theologian). He was a member of the poetic society of Halberstadt, published his first poems in 1788.
Published after his death, Schmidt's Leben und auserlesene Werke (Stuttgart, 1826-1828). Schmidt also owns the publication of Klopstock's correspondence under the title "Klopstock und seine Freunde" (Halberstadt, 1820).
