Esseda

T. Thornicroft . Boadicea and her daughters

Essedum ( lat.essedum ) - Celtic war chariot . It was a two-wheeled cart drawn by two horses, usually with one charioteer (who could be armed with a spear) and one warrior armed with a sword and bow. Warriors sometimes dismounted from chariots during the battle.

Since the Celtic warriors acquired weapons and equipment for their own money, the warriors on the essads were always noble people , while representatives of the lower classes of society were infantry. Many noble warriors were buried along with their essedi to emphasize their social status [1] .

Esseds are considered the last fighting horse drawn carts in Europe. In continental Europe, they were used until 100 BC. e., and in Britain and Ireland - even after 200 A.D. e. The first description of essay in ancient sources dates back to 295 BC. e.
