Telemachus (brig, 1828)

Telemac is a brig of the Baltic, then Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Empire , a participant in the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829 and the Greek Revolution .

Brig Description

Sailing wooden brig , one of the eleven brigts of the Okhta type [4] . According to various sources, the length of the brig was from 30.12 to 30.2 meters , the width was from 9.35 to 9.7 meters , and the draft was from 3.86 to 3.9 meters . The initial armament of the vessel consisted of 24 carronades , armament in the Black Sea Fleet - two 6-pound guns, eighteen 24-pound carronades and one 3-pound falconet [1] [2] [3] .

Service History

The Telemak brig was laid down on December 1, 1827 at the Okhten Shipyard. After launching on May 12, 1828, it became part of the Baltic Fleet . The construction was carried out by shipbuilder V.F. Stoke [1] [2] .

He took part in the Russian-Turkish war of 1828-1829 . As part of the squadron of Rear Admiral P.I. Rikord, in 1828 he moved from Kronstadt to the Mediterranean Sea to strengthen the squadron of Vice Admiral Count L.P. Geiden . In April and May 1829, as part of the squadron, he participated in the blockade of the Dardanelles . After the departure of most ships of the squadron to Russia in the spring of 1830, he was left in the Archipelago as part of the squadron of Rear Admiral P. I. Ricord to assist the Greek government and protect Russian shipping based in Napoli di Romagna [1] [2] .

In August of the same year, together with an English ship, he was sent to the island of Samos in order to prevent clashes between supporters and opponents of the first ruler of independent Greece, Count John of Kapodistrias . During the Greek Revolution took part in the blockade of the rebellious islands. On July 25, 1831, as part of a squadron, he approached the island of Poros and blocked rebel vessels in the Monastery Bay. On July 27, he fired on with coastal batteries and rebel vessels and put down coastal artillery. The next day, he took part in the bombing and destruction of enemy ships in the bay. On August 4, the Telemak squadron moved from Poros to the island of Syrah, and on September 10 approached the Gulf of Kalamata and captured the rebel ships. On August 3, 1832, the brig prevented shelling of the Patras fortress by ships of the English and French squadrons, and in October of the same year the ship was sent to the island of Idro to negotiate with the rebels [1] .

In June 1833, as part of the squadron of Vice Admiral P.I. Rikord, he left the Archipelago for Constantinople and then to Buyuk-dere, where the ships joined the squadron of Vice Admiral M.P. Lazarev . On June 28, the squadron left Buyuk-dere and, having entered Feodosia , reached Sevastopol by July 22, where the brig was transferred to the Black Sea Fleet [1] [2] .

In 1834, went sailing in the Black Sea . In 1836 he underwent timber in Nikolaev . In 1837 he left for the Archipelago, where until the end of 1938 he was transferred to the disposal of the Russian envoy in Greece. From 1839 to 1842 he took part in operations off the coast of the Caucasus as part of detachments. At the same time, from October 8 to 10, 1841, as part of the Rear Admiral MN Stanyukovich’s detachment, he took part in promoting the advance of the ground forces, Lieutenant General I. R. Anrep from Adler to Sochi . In 1843 and 1844 he carried out fire service in Odessa , and from 1845 to 1852 - in Sevastopol [1] [3] .

The brig Telemac was dismantled in 1852 [1] [3] .
