Geography and climate
The city is located in the north-eastern part of the state of Georgia, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge , on the banks of the large Lanier reservoir. The reservoir was created in 1956 as a result of the construction of a dam on the Chattahuchi River , near the city of Buford. Lanier Reservoir is a popular holiday destination for residents of northern Georgia. There are many forests in the Gainesville area, both deciduous and coniferous. According to the US Census Bureau, the city’s area is 75.4 km², of which approximately 5.2 km² (7%) is occupied by open water surfaces.
According to Köppen's classification, the climate of the city is characterized as a subtropical oceanic climate (Cfa). It is quite warm, average monthly temperatures vary from 5.2 ° C - in January to 25.2 ° C - in July. The average annual temperature is 15.4 ° C. Precipitation is evenly distributed throughout the year, the wettest month is March (148 mm), and the driest month is October (87 mm). The annual rainfall is about 1356 mm [1] .
April 6, 1936 at about 8:30 a.m. a powerful tornado hit the city. The element claimed the lives of more than 200 people [2] . The damage from the elements is estimated at 13 million dollars.

According to the 2010 census, Gainesville has a population of 33,804, making it the 22nd largest city in the state [3] . The population density is about 173 people / km². Racial Composition: White (54.2%); African Americans (15.2%); Native Americans (0.6%); Asians (3.2%); residents of the Pacific Islands (0.2%); representatives of other races (23.4%) and representatives of two or more races (3.2%). Hispanics of all races make up 41.6% of the population.
