Biography
Born in 1933 .
He graduated from the Faculty of Journalism of Leningrad State University. Since 1956, he teaches Russian literature at the Leningrad Theater Institute. A. N. Ostrovsky (later LGITMiK, now the St. Petersburg State Academy of Theater Arts). In the second half of the 1950s he acted as a literary critic on the pages of the journal Zvezda [1] .
In 1970, the first book of Yu. N. Chirva was published, co-written with his wife, the famous theater expert L. S. Danilova. She was dedicated to the work of actor Oleg Strizhenov .
In subsequent years, the main topic of his research interests was the work of Leonid Adreev . In 1973, Chirva defended his thesis “Socio-philosophical drama of L. N. Andreev, 1905-1909 and the problem of the development of drama in the late XIX and early XX centuries” [2] . And in the late 1980s. was published two-volume dramatic works of the writer, from beginning to end prepared and commented on by the professor. About 30 doctoral and master's theses in Russian only on Russian literature cite the works of Chirva about L. Andreev.
Since 1990, Yu. N. Chirva has been the head of the Department of Russian Literature and Art at SPbGATI.
In 2008, the scientist became a holder of the Order of Honor of the Russian Federation.

Lectures by Yu. N. Chirva on the history of Russian literature, which he has been reading for more than 50 years at the St. Petersburg Academy of Theater Arts , and the St. Petersburg State Conservatory Rimsky-Korsakov (Department of Opera and Ballet Director) had a significant impact on the domestic theater. A huge number of artists, choreographers, ballet scholars, theater opera, ballet and music critics, opera directors, screenwriters, directors, playwrights, theater artists and theater experts began a serious acquaintance with Russian literature in his classes and lectures. The teacher himself has repeatedly acted as a literary consultant in many productions of St. Petersburg theaters on classical texts of Russian literature. “Plenipotentiary of Her Majesty's Russian literature,” writer and journalist Tatyana Moskvina called Yu. N. Chirva in her essay on the teacher [3] . “I reread his lectures on Russian literature as a separate work of art,” admired a popular actress Elizaveta Boyarskaya , another student of Chirva, in an interview [4] . “There is no day when I would not recall the lessons of Yuri Nikolaevich,” said N. N. Chirve N.A. at the award ceremony. Russia N. N. Ivanov [5] . Among his former students, many well-known Russian artists, writers, theater critics, directors and playwrights.
