Biography
Manuel Jesus Plaza Reyes was born in Lampa , his parents were Camilo Plaza and Maria Reyes. Later, the family moved to Santiago , where, in parallel with his studies at school, he began to practice athletics. At the age of 16, he first took part in competitions.
In 1920, he took part in the South American Athletics Championship in Santiago, where he won a bronze medal at a distance of 5.000 m and a silver medal at a distance of 10.000 m. In 1924, at the South American Championship in Athletics, he won gold medals at 3.000 m , 5.000 m and 10.000 m, as well as in cross-country; In the same year, he took part in the Olympic Games in Paris , where he performed in a marathon, but finished only 6th. In 1926 and 1927, he again won all four long-distance gold medals at the South American Championships.
In 1928, at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam, Manuel Plaza finished second in the marathon, becoming the first Olympic champion in Chile's history. In 1933, he once again took part in the South American Track and Field Championships, winning gold medals at a distance of 20 miles and in cross-country.
