Biography
Born on September 26, 1955 in a family of Greek immigrants Panagiotis and Maria Stratigeas, in the New York area, Astoria and from childhood belonged to the followers of the old-style Greek movement (accounted for by the nephew of the late Metropolitan Peter of Astoria (Astifidis) , who baptized him in 1956, as well as archimandrite Nifont (Astyphidis), who became his recipient).
He graduated from elementary school in New York and came to study in Athens, where he studied at the Greek American Community School in Halandri.
From 1974 to 1978 he studied at the theological school of the University of Athens , and upon graduation from November 17, 1978 he became a member of the monastic community at the Greek old-style cathedral of St. Markella in Astoria (New York area). On the day of the Holy Trinity in 1979, Metropolitan Peter of Astoria was tonsured a monk with the name of Paul.
On the day of Pentecost 1980, he was ordained a hierodeacon , and on the day of Pentecost 1985, he was ordained a hieromonk and elevated to the rank of archimandrite .
Over the years, he was the closest assistant to Metropolitan Peter of Astoria (Astyphidis) in the administration of the American Diocese of the “Florinite” Synod of the Church of the Greek Orthodox Church.
On February 6, 1998, at a meeting of the “Florinite” Synod of the Church of the Orthodox Church of Greece, the decision was made to elect Archimandrite Paul to be the administrator of the American Diocese and to ordain him to the rank of bishop. On February 13, 1998, the bishop was headed by the Archbishop of Athens and All Hellas Chrysostomos (Kiusis) , Primate of the “Florinite” Synod of the Church of the Greek Orthodox Church .
In 1999, he founded the Assumption Monastery in and became its first rector.
In October 2001, together with Bishop ROCOR Agafangel (Pashkovsky) and ROCOR priest Vsevolod Dutikov, he held a procession to the ruins of the World Trade Center in New York, where he served a moleben with blessing of water and blessed the city. In his sermon, the hierarch noted: “More recently, standing in this place, we would have stood in the shadow of the twin towers. And those who climbed to the very top of these towers, below, at their feet, turned out to be all of America, the whole world. September 11, the greatness of America did not fall, but manifested. Together we pray for the armed forces of America ... We pray for our President George W. Bush , for the Governor of New York, George Pataki, and for the respected Mayor Rudolfo Giuliani ” [1] .
After a stroke, he lost the ability to walk, and therefore was put to rest on October 23, 2013 [2] .
