Yandex.Kit is an operating system from the Russian company Yandex based on the open source OS Android , announced on February 19, 2014 [1] . In May 2015, the project was closed [2] .

Rumors about Yandex creating its own operating system for phones have been around since 2011, when the company acquired the company SPB Software , a manufacturer of software for mobile devices and mobile operators [3] .
Nevertheless, for a long time, the SPB Software technology called Yandex.Shell was used only as a shell with the integrated Yandex services for mobile phones based on the Android OS. The company took three years to create Yandex.Kita.
The name of the operating system is found in both the Russian and English versions - Yandex.Kit and Yandex.Kit [4] , which gives rise to a kind of pun . In the first case, an association occurs with the Russian word “ whale ”, which is reflected in the logo, which is a stylized image of a whale folded from multi-colored arcs, resembling a signal level pictogram - it symbolizes close connection with smartphones and demonstrates the high-tech product [5] . A reference to this interpretation of the OS name was also contained in the release date itself - February 19 - World Whale Protection Day [6] . On the other hand, the noun kit [kit] in English means “set”, “set”, which means completeness and completeness, “completeness” of the service [6] .
Yandex.Kit is based on the version of Android 4.2.2 [7] .
Yandex.Kit is a ready-made software solution, pre-sale firmware, which is installed on phones or tablets during production [6] . At the time of release, two smartphones on Kita were announced - Huawei Honor 3 Yandex and Explay Flame, and the upcoming launch of tablets was announced [1] . A similar method of cooperation between manufacturers of “iron” and search engines came to Russia from China , where similar solutions have already been tested [6] . Interface
The OS interface is represented by the Yandex.Shell shell - it is a three-dimensional "carousel" with the ability to create several desktops , or "home screens", where you can place widgets , folders and applications [9] . The main menu is single-level - there is no section with a list of all installed applications (Apple’s iOS is similarly arranged) [9] . Especially for “Kit” Shell was completely redrawn, everything superfluous was removed and the design of the main elements was updated, the speed of work was increased [6] .
Phonebook
The phone book recognizes various forms of Russian names (Shurik, Alexander, Sashka) and is connected to Yandex.Directory - it can determine the numbers of organizations (it makes it possible to determine the incoming call from an unknown company, the data about which will be downloaded from the cloud ), the search for phone numbers of organizations by base of three million contacts of the "Directory" [10] .
It is possible to transfer contacts from an old phone using the Yandex.Movement service [11] .
Localization
According to the developers, Yandex.Kit is completely localized for runet : all applications from Google in it are replaced by the corresponding Yandex services ( maps , browser , calendar , etc.), and instead of the Google Play application store, its own Yandex.Stor is installed. Last on the OS release day included more than 100 thousand applications and, subject to the purchase of a phone with a “Kit”, returns 10% of the cost of applications for new purchases [6] .
