Paleontologists include this site in the region. Taphonomic and palynological studies have found numerous remains of flora and fauna here, including seeds of cantium, which grows mainly in African forests and forest-steppes, as well as skeletons of thin-bodied monkeys and where , which suggest that in prehistoric times Aramis was a moist, closed woodland, whereas Now it is one of the driest, hottest and sparsest populated areas of the planet.

In 1992 and 1993, a group of paleontologists led by Tim White [1] [2] [3] discovered in Aramis the remains of a total of 17 individuals of ancient hominids dating back to 4.4 million years ago, which is 0.5 million years old more ancient than the oldest remains of Australopithecus afar discovered in the eastern part of Middle Awash. The remains were classified as a new genus and species of hominids and were called Ardipithecus ramidus . An article about this discovery was printed on the front page of The New York Times [4] .
