Biography

A scene from the life of St. John Chrysostom .
Portrait of Ali Pasha Yaninsky .

Spiridon Venturas was born in 1761 on the Greek island of Lefkada, controlled by Venice , in a family of Antonios Venturas and Jannula Mel, a native of Kerkyra .

Initially, he studied painting with Nikolaos Doksaras . In the period 1785-1795 he studied at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts and with the artists Giorgione , Veronese , Titian , Tintoretto .

Returning to his island, he became a church painter, as well as a portrait painter [2] .

Venturas was familiar with the technique of egg tempera (the icon of St. Eustathius), but he painted mainly with oil paints in a western manner. Venturas painted icons for the Church of St. Nicholas in Lefkada. For some time he worked on the island of Kefalonia [3] .

The most famous of the secular works of the artist is a portrait of Ali Pasha Yaninsky . The portrait was commissioned by Venturas Consul Ali Pasha in Lefkada. In January 1818, when Ali was in the city of Preveza , on the opposite bank of Lefkada, Venturas went with the consul to the territory controlled by Ali Pasha to begin to paint a portrait from nature. The consul intended to make money on his gift to Ali Pasha. But when after 3 months the consul went with a portrait to Ioannina , Ali was not very generous and the consul refused to pay the artist.

Only in 1819, and by court decision, Venturas managed to get his promised 100 thalers [4] .

The artist remained a bachelor throughout his life and did not create his own family. He died on June 18, 1835 on his native island and was buried in the family tomb in the Church of the Virgin of Strangers in Lefkada [5] [6] [7] .
