Biography

A prominent Israeli politician of Bulgarian origin, called "the true tribune and leader of the Jews from Bulgaria " [1] [2] .

In 1939 he arrived in Palestine as a macabist . He was an officer of the Haganah and a participant in the war for independence (defense of besieged Jerusalem - 1948).

Soon after moving to Jerusalem, he began to engage in social activities and was elected as a deputy of the city council from the MAPAM party. In 1961, he was elected to the Knesset on the list of the same party. He remained a deputy until 1969. A member of Golda Meir’s inner cabinet, along with Moshe Dayan during the Doomsday War (1973).

  • 1969-1970 - a minister without a portfolio,
  • 1970-1977 - Minister of Health; as a minister, he actually created a modern healthcare system and a hospital base of the state when he implemented a plan according to which 10 hospitals with 5,000 beds were built, accessible to all citizens - both Jews and Arabs, regardless of their financial capabilities.
  • June-October 1974 - at the same time the Minister of Social Security of Israel.

He was a supporter of the guaranteed rights of the Palestinian Arabs, peace with them and the creation of a Palestinian state that exists together with Israel. He sharply criticized the government of Golda Meir for the disastrous start of the Doomsday War, opposed the First Lebanon War. For this, he was fiercely attacked by far-right and ultra-religious Jewish groups along with Yitzhak Rabin , whose probable assassination of the Shem-Tov predicted back in 1991.

In 1981, he was again elected to the Knesset, in 1988 he announced his resignation from politics.

Since 1994, the Victor Shem-Job Veterans Club, named after him, has been working, created by activists of the Ѓa-Shomer ha-Tsair-Bulgaria movement in Tel Aviv-Yafo.
