One of the first art historians involved in independent art. Author of numerous works on the history of art, organizer of many conferences and exhibitions of contemporary art. Since 1987, he has been exhibiting as a member of the New Artists group. Member of the " LF / HF ", "Friends of Mayakovsky Club", academic secretary of the "New Academy of Fine Arts." Participated in more than 100 exhibitions around the world. He worked in the Central Exhibition Hall "Manege" , head of the Palaces of the Lower Park in Peterhof , a librarian in the Hermitage , taught art history at the University. Herzen Since 1993 - publisher of the magazine “Art Will”, newspapers “Susanin 2003” and “Genius”. Director of the library of independent art in the partnership "Free Culture".

Biography
From childhood he illustrated books on the archeology of his parents and participated in expeditions from Central Asia to the Polar region ; worked in the drawing circle at the Vyborg Palace of Pioneers. In 1977 he graduated from art school number 1 of the Dzerzhinsky district . In 1983 he defended his diploma at the Department of Art History of the Faculty of History of the Leningrad State University. A. A. Zhdanova (teachers - N. N. Kalitina , I. D. Chechot , V. A. Bulkin , etc.). In 1985 - one of the founders of the "Leningrad Club of Art Critics" - the first independent professional organization engaged in modern art. The first art historian who collaborated with the Leningrad youth underground of the 1980s.
He was an active participant in the rave movement , born on Fontanka, 145, in the Planetarium and the Tunnel Club. Since 1989, he traveled a lot, lived and worked in Paris , New York , Mexico City , Berlin , Vienna and met with many leading figures of modern art and popular culture: John Cage , Nam June Paik , Donald Judd , etc. [1] He conducted the program "New Composers" on the first techno-radio station "Record".
In 2000, he opened the Petersburg Archive and Library of Independent Art (PAIBNI) at the Pushkinskaya-10 Art Center, where he held over fifty exhibitions on the history of modern Leningrad / St. Petersburg culture. In 2008, together I. Pomerantseva organized the Petersburg Video Archive (PVA). Author of numerous works on contemporary culture and art. Published in the samizdat magazines of the 1980s, "Watch", " Mitin Journal " and the periodicals " Art ", "ARTchronika", "DI", "Comments", "Steps", "NoMI", " Cabinet ", "Interior + Design " Kommersant ", " Vedomosti ", " Poster ", "Taleon", "New Observation", " Art Journal ", "Russian Telegraph", " Country Life ", "Framework", "NEWS", etc. In 2017 published the book "Schizo-Revolution. Sketches of St. Petersburg culture of the second half of the twentieth century " [2] .
Creativity
Since 1988, he participated in exhibitions of the New Artists group and worked in the LF / HF squat. Since 1995 - Scientific Secretary of the New Academy of Fine Arts Timur Novikov . Together with him in 1996 the exhibition "Nudity and Modernism" began a "war" with Moscow art, which has since become a "common place" of artistic life. Together with Novikov, he held many exhibitions, actions, issued a number of manifestos, art publications and created a number of organizations: Art Will (1997), Institute of the History of Modern Art (1999), Museum of Modern Art at NAII (2002). Took part in more than 200 exhibitions and festivals. As an artist, he received grants from the Pollok-Krasner Foundation (New York, 1989), the Soros Foundation (St. Petersburg, 1993), the Philip Morris Kunstforderung (Berlin, 1996), Kultur Kontakt (Vienna, 1998). In 1994, he was a finalist for the Ars Fennica competition. Works are in the collections of the State Russian Museum , the Central Museum of Communications. A.S. Popov , State Tretyakov Gallery , National Center for Contemporary Art (Moscow), Zimmerli Art Museum (USA), Museum of Nonconformist Art , private collections in Russia, France, USA, Mexico, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, etc.
