Traditions of the day

In the mining tradition, the celebration begins with participation in the morning mass or with a solemn meeting near the statue of St. Barbara, which, as a rule, is always located in the administrative buildings of the mines. After a mass or meeting, the miners make a group procession along the streets of settlements with members of their families or near the so-called residential buildings under the name Familyok , in which the miners live or lived. As a rule, at the beginning of the procession they carry the flag of a mine or church parish [1] .

On the occasion of the holiday, various concerts and events are held in mining towns [4] .

In the preceding days before the holiday, miners organize informal meetings called “Karczmy piwne” (beer tavern) in pubs where pensioners working in mines, the administration of mines, and students of mining departments are invited. Often such meetings are organized by the Society of Mining Engineers and Technicians [1] .

Karczmy piwne is held in accordance with a certain ritual. Participants in this meeting must wear miners uniforms. At the beginning of the Karczmy piwne, the participants are divided into two groups, which sit at two opposite long tables, the benches in front of which are covered with old straw for the elderly and fresh straw for the young participants. Competing groups compete in the amount of beer drunk, tell jokes, recall wonderful and funny situations from miner's life and sing songs. The competition is followed by the selected participant [1] [5] .

During these meetings, a special rite of passage into the mining cartel, preserved from the Middle Ages, is also performed. A novice reads a miner's oath and takes a small symbolic leap in front of the hide held by two elderly miners, after which a symbolic sword is applied to his shoulder. At the end of the ceremony, one of the honored miners, bearing the title of Lis Major, puts miner's clothing on the shoulders of the newcomer and after that he is considered accepted into the miner's fraternity [1] [5] .

Spouses of miners on the same days organize separate informal meetings in the pubs called "Combry babskie" [1] .
