Biography

Seal of Vladislav Bely, 1355

Vladislav was born around 1330 . He was the only son of Prince of the Wrathful Casimir III, cousin of King Casimir III the Great . His mother's name is unknown. Vladislav had an older sister, Elzbieta , whom Stephen II Kotromanić took in Bosnia’s wife of Bosnia around 1339 .

Great-grandfather of Vladislav, Casimir I Kuyavsky , divided Kuyavia between children. His second son, Zemomysl , received the Inowroclaw Principality . Zemomysl, in turn, also divided its possessions between sons into even smaller estates, and its youngest son, Casimir III, got Gnevkovo . After the death of his father (around 1350 ), Vladislav inherited this small principality.

In 1359, Vladislav married Elzbiet, daughter of Prince Albert Strzelcki , representative of the Silesian branch of Piast . However, the young princess soon died. Struck by grief, Vladislav sold his inheritance to King Casimir for 1000 florins and went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land . Having been in Jerusalem , he arrived in France , and in Avignon he met with Pope Urban V. In 1366 he entered the Cistercian monastery of Sito , and a year later he moved to the Benedictine monastery in Dijon .

In 1370 , after the death of Casimir the Great, Vladislav decided to return to his principality, despite the fact that he did not receive liberation from priestly vows. The new Polish king Louis of Hungary refused to give Vladislav his inheritance. Then Vladislav entered the battle with Louis, claiming his rights to the throne (he was the last representative of the Kuyavian Piast branch, which belonged to Leszek Chyorny , Vladislav Loketek and Casimir the Great). In 1373, he appeared in Kuyavia and captured Wloclawek , Inowroclaw and Gnevkovo. This success was temporary, and soon Vladislav was forced to leave Poland and take refuge in the possessions of Ulrich von der Osten. Two years later, Vladislav, collecting forces (among his troops was even a detachment of Burgundians Philip the Bold ), again invaded Kuyavia. The decisive episode of the war was the siege of the castle of Zlotor. Vladislav was injured during a duel with knight Bartosz from Wesenberg. During the siege, the grandson of Casimir the Great, Casimir Pomeranian , who fought on the side of the king, was also wounded from a stone-thrower.

Unable to achieve the desired, Vladislav in 1377 entered into an agreement with Louis, for 10 thousand florins, abandoning all claims to the principality and the Polish crown. He returned to Dijon. In 1382 , after the death of the king, Vladislav probably again lost his hope of taking the throne. In any case, it is known that he obtained from the pope the withdrawal of the priesthood. However, information about his further actions has not been preserved. Vladislav died on February 29, 1388 in Strasbourg . His tomb is located in the cathedral of Dijon .
