According to the US Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 546 km², of which 337 km² is land and 207 km², or 38.2% is water.

According to the 2000 census [1] , 9,932 residents live in the district, consisting of 4,253 households and 2,913 families . The population density is 29 people per km². On the territory of the district there are 6,362 residential buildings, with a building density of 19 buildings per km². The racial composition of the population: whites - 78.50%, African Americans - 20.13%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.25%, Asians - 0.12%, representatives of other races - 0.41%, representatives of two or more races - 0.58%. Hispanic made up 0.55% of the population.
32.40% of the total number of households are children under the age of 18, 56.10% of households are married couples living together, 9.50% of households are single women without a spouse, 31.50% of households households are not related to families, 27.10% of households consist of one person, 14.40% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.27 people and the average family size is 2.73 people.
The age structure of the county: 19.20% younger than 18 years old, 5.10% from 18 to 24, 22.90% from 25 to 44, 30.30% from 45 to 64 and 22.50% from 65 and older.
