Biography
In 1961 he graduated from the cinema department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography . Since 1964 he taught at VGIK the history of foreign cinema. In 1966 he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of art criticism on the theme "Problems of War and Peace in American Cinema".
In 1999, he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Arts on the topic "Civilization Models in the Cinema of Western Europe and the USA (1914-1984)."
Professor (1993), Doctor of Arts (2000). Member of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia and the Association of Film Education and Media Pedagogy of Russia. Laureate of the Guild of Film Critics and Film Critics of Russia (2001). Since 1998, he was the dean of the screenwriting and cinematography faculty of the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography, since 2001, he was the head of the department of film studies.
Published on issues of cinema since 1958. Author of a number of books and articles on the history of foreign cinema.
